Thesis Title: Apocryphal Narratives in Old English Sermon Collections
About
I am currently a PhD candidate in Medieval Studies at the University of Connecticut. I received my BA in English from Houghton College in 2007, and my MA in Medieval Studies at the University of Connecticut in 2009. My research interests include Old English and Old Norse literature; intellectual history and transmissions; the Bible in/as literature; apocrypha and pseudepigrapha; apocalyptica; and vernacular sermons.
In my dissertation, I examine the use of Christian apocryphal materials in collections of Old English sermons c.950-1010. Sources include the Vercelli and Blickling sermon collections, as well as Ælfric’s Catholic Homilies and Lives of Saints. By offering the first extended examination of apocryphal narratives in these sources, I challenge previous assumptions about apocrypha and propose new ways of reading Old English sermons as part of the diverse manifestations of Christianity in tenth-century Anglo-Saxon England.
